Earthquake felt in Buffalo, New York

Were those tremors at 1:45pm in upstate New York from an Earthquake?  Here in Amherst, NY everything was shaking – not violently, but very noticeably.  The tremors lasted for about 15 seconds.  At first I thought there might be a low flying plane or helicopter, but oddly did not hear any noises.  It was an eerie sensation… just curious if anyone else near Buffalo felt the trembles?  Hopefully the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake  Engineering Research (MCEER), headquartered at  the University at Buffalo has detected this tremor and can provide more data.

Internet Explorer losing browser share

Firefox browser continues to gain market shareAt it’s peak in 2003, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer claimed 95% of the browser market.  According to a recent report from BBC News, that figure is now around 60%.

Latest statistics, from measurement firm NetApplications, show that IE has 59.9% of the market, with Firefox gaining on it, with 24.5%.

While third-place Google Chrome’s 6.7% share of the market looks tiny by comparison it is rising sharply, up from just 1.7% this time last year.

A new version of IE is imminent.

Microsoft has gradually been losing market share, largely due to concerns over security, experts said.

Apple’s Safari browser is also growing due to increased sales of Macs, plus the iPhone, and iPad.  As an avid Firefox user, I am happy to see an increased usage of Mozilla.  Firefox has a great variety of add-ons to customize your browsing experience.  Although I must admit, from a development standpoint, it would be nice to have some commonalities and standards.

Apple continues to exclude Adobe Flash from iPhone and iPad

AppleAfter an ongoing debate between Apple and Adobe, Steve Jobs announced that Adobe’s Flash is just too sluggish, drains battery life, and is has too many bugs for the iPhone and iPad devices. In a recent article, some of Job’s 1,685-word rant are shared.

He cited “reliability, security and performance,” and the fact that Flash was designed “for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers” as some of the reasons Apple will continue to keep the program off its devices.

But he said the most important reason is Flash puts a third party between Apple and software developers. In other words, developers can take advantage of improvements from Apple only if Adobe upgrades its own software, Jobs wrote.

Apple has been criticized for the omission of Flash because that limits what the iPhone can do. Hulu.com, the popular video viewing site, uses Flash, for example, as do many restaurant websites. But thanks to the immense popularity of the iPhone, game and application developers are pouring their creations onto Apple’s devices without using Flash.

It’ll be interesting to see if this approach by Apple is effective in getting cooperation from Adobe.  After all, Flash is the web standard for delivering rich media content.  Should Apple be more agreeable or do they have a right to be finicky?

How far can 3D technology go?

Is it me or are people and manufacturers getting carried away with 3D technology?  A few months ago, I saw Avatar and though it was fantastic – in the IMAX theater.  I don’t know that it will have the same effect at home… even with a 70” screen or projection.  Do we even need this?  I honestly don’t see 3D TVs making a tremendous impact – especially if you are required to wear glasses to view it.

I’ve read articles about 3D being delivered on mobile devices and smart phones.  I haven’t had a chance to test this out, but I can’t imagine that it would be that impressive.  Am I missing something?

I think I would be more intrigued by hologram TV.  Let me project a program in the middle of my living room then walk around in it.  CNN experimented with some live holographic images which looked impressive.  I’d like to see it live for the full effect.  In my opinion, hologram technology would be the next major leap for home entertainment.  It sounds like there are many questions to answer, but it may not be too farfetched of a concept.

Mobile app sales expected to exceed $17 billion

Designated DialerThere’s no denying that consumers are obsessed with smart phone applications.  After all, they are convenient, easy to install, and often times free.  I mean, who doesn’t need the “Designated Dialer” app to prevent them from making those oh-so-embarrassing boozy, late-night calls to former partners?  The personal integrity that app alone has saved is mind boggling.  Where was that a few years ago?

According to a recent study by Chetan Sharma Consulting, the mobile app market is expected to grow to $17.5 billion during the next two years.  Furthermore the number of downloads is anticipated to surge from 7 billion to 50 billion – which is a truly remarkable statistic.  People are addicted.

Hopefully someone can develop an “app” (or hardware solution) to extend battery life.  My biggest gripe – especially travelling during a storm – is the dreaded low battery alert.  When your flight is delayed for 8 hours and then cancelled, you’ve got a lot of research, phone calls, and contingency plans to coordinate.  The last thing you need to worry about is dead batteries and several dropped 3G calls.  Am I off on a rant?

All things considered, it is simply another indication that people love conveniences.  We love to communicate in new and innovative methods.  Convenient applications which can save us time or simply make us smile will continue to shine.

Success with Twitter

Sarah Killen finds success through TwitterThis is an interesting Twitter success story involving Conan O’Brien.  While this is clearly not indicative of normal Twitter results, it does demonstrate the immediate power and reach of Twitter.  The article is about Sarah Killen – a young woman who was trying to raise sponsor donations for a charity benefit walk for breast cancer.

“on Friday, Sarah found a message in her MySpace inbox asking if Conan could follow her. She didn’t really understand the implications of saying yes. Because Conan wasn’t following anyone before Sarah. And as soon as he started following Sarah, her life changed.

She had 16,000 followers in two days. She had 4,000 emails within an hour of Conan following her. She had offers for free stuff (including a custom made wedding dress from a designer in New York). And she had money for the breast cancer walk, and was using her new-found fame to promote other charities, like the Children’s Hunger Fund, which was brought to her attention by that dress designer.”

Again, most Twitter users do not stumble into these situations.  The unique combination of celebrities and social media can create remarkable results.  It would be interesting to get Conan’s thoughts on this outcome.

Directing air traffic at JFK is so easy even a caveman can do it

Child directs JFK air trafficApparently the “bring your son to work” day at the JFK air traffic control tower was taken a bit too literally a few days ago.  While his son was on winter vacation, a father who works in one of the world’s busiest air traffic control centers, thought it would be entertaining to not only bring his son to work, but to encourage him to communicate directions.  “Jet Blue 171, clear for takeoff,” the young boy said, according to one of the audio recordings from LiveATC.net.  It’s a rather scary thought for anyone who regularly flies into or out of the airport.  Even if the child was being coached by his father, it only takes a minor slip to create a disaster.  As I learned of the report, I was expecting to hear “What’s your vector, Victor?” or “Roger, Roger”.

According to ABC News, “The FAA, which hasn’t released the names of the controllers involved, is not treating this as a joke. It is investigating the controller, as well as a supervising controller. Both have been relieved of their duties, the FAA said.”

In another exchange to a plane bound for Mexico, the child says “Adios, amigo.”

What’s your opinion… is this just innocent child’s play or something more serious?  Is social media magnifying the impact of this event?  Should Geico use this for their next ad?

Homeland Security monitoring social media during the Olympics

Department of Homeland Security SealABC News recently posted an article “During the Olympics, The Feds Will Be Reading Your Tweets – And the Blotter… DHS Is Monitoring Social Media and Web Sites for Terror and Disaster Info”.

As the winter Olympics begin, the Department of Homeland Security has disclosed that it will be monitoring the comments and posts on websites and social media like Twitter for information on possible terror threats. Among the sites listed in a privacy impact statement filed Friday afternoon by DHS are the Drudge Report, the Huffington Post, Twitter, Google and this web site, the Blotter.

The National Operations Center of DHS will watch the web for information, according to the statement, to “provide situational awareness” in the event of natural disaster, an “act of terrorism, or other manmade disaster.”

“The Olympics are a potential target for such events,” said the statement. The statement did not list all web sites and social media that the NOC will monitor, but provided 31 examples, many of them, like the Blotter, sites that cover breaking news, security, or terror.

This really shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.  I’m sure this is normal DHS activity on a daily basis.  It’s only heightened during international events – such as the Olympics.  While some of the comments on ABC refer to big brother and lack of privacy, others think it’s absurd that a terrorist would actually post their message on Drudge or other social media sources.

What do you think?  Is social media monitoring just business as usual?

Photo editing just became a Picnik

Picnik photo editing with waveSpawnI’ve heard of the photo editing site called “Picnik” before.  I just read their press release announcing that one billion photos have been edited through their service.

“How much is 1 billion? If we viewed all these images, it would take us over 100 years to see them all!”

Because of the hype, I figured I would give the service a test drive for myself.  It’s worthwhile to mention that I’ve been a professional Photoshop user for several years.  I’m an expert user and very familiar with photo retouching and the various options that are available.  With that said, I think Picnik has delivered a quality web-based photo manipulation tool for the masses.  It has a simple and intuitive interface that any generation can maneuver.  I think it will accomplish 90% of what most people would have the need to do.  Furthermore, Picnik has added some great themes for Valentines and other holidays to quickly spice up your photos and create unique scrapbooks.

It’s also worth noting that tomorrow – February 3, 2010, Picnik is opening up their premium services (typically a paid service) to everyone for free.  The promotion runs from Wednesday 2/3 at 9am PST through Thursday 2/4 at 9am PST.

“In addition, the person who edited the billionth photo on Picnik will receive Picnik Premium for life and will be featured on Picnik in the month of February.”

Give them a try at http://www.picnik.com and share your feedback with us.

Buffalo Extreme Makeover Home EditionBuffalo will get the spotlight for 2 hours this Sunday night (January 24) on ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition.  The renovations that were completed last fall on Buffalo’s West Side will be airing at 8:00pm EST.  The Powell family is the home of a Jamaican immigrant who has done extensive work on the domicile over the past few years.  Apparently the local Buffalo community generated the most volunteers and biggest turnout ever for the final reveal.

Shea’s Theater is hosting a free event tomorrow evening to broadcast the event on the big screen.  It will be interesting to see if they can sellout the theater as the community rallies around the Powell family in support.
