Christmas Mobile AppwaveSpawn recently collaborated with CINNA Apps LLC to develop and launch a Christmas mobile application called Santa Visits Our House.  The project included the creation of custom 3D animation and mobile application design and development. A number of technologies were implemented to streamline the process.  The app is available for installation on Android devices and Apple iOS (iPhone and iPad).

Holiday Movie PreviewThe Santa Visits Our House Movie Maker is a Christmas app that allows users to create their own personal Christmas video of Santa’s ride from the North Pole to their home! The application prompts users to take a photo of their house, Christmas tree and snack for Santa.  Additionally, children’s names and postal code are entered to fully customize the experience. The app will then render a custom movie of Santa flying over the house, delivering presents under the tree, writing a custom letter, eating the snack and then flying away.  It’s a magical way to capture Santa visiting your house and share the moment with children and grandchildren.

Developing Mobile Apps for Windows 8

Windows 8 PhoneIs your business considering a mobile application to connect with the growing number of smartphone and tablet users?  Have you finalized which operating systems (Android, Apple iOS, Blackberry, and Microsoft Windows) to focus on?  Have you given serious thought to Windows 8?  We’ve compiled some general statistics to assist.

While the overall percentage of Microsoft Windows 8 smartphone users in the US is small (5.6%), the numbers are steadily rising.  In fact, Windows is expected to own 12% of the smartphone market by 2017.  To put those numbers in perspective, let’s start with 140M smartphone users in the US today.  More mobile subscribers are using smartphones than non-smartphones (51%). The percentage of smartphone users in the US is expected to climb to 80% by 2017 – that would translate to approximately 224M smartphones in the US.

If these predictions hold true, the number of Microsoft Windows mobile phone users in the US by 2017 could be over 26 million (12% of 224M).  That’s a pretty large demographic to overlook when developing a mobile application. Also keep in mind that “90 per cent of the world is using the Windows operating system in some form or another today.  That’s a whole lot of users just waiting to buy apps from the Windows Store.”

Flash coming soon to iPhones and iPads

Flash coming soon to iPhoneAfter an antitrust investigation by the FTC and increasing competition from other mobile devices (such as Google’s Android), Apple has “decided” to relax their programming restrictions for third parties.  Even though this sounds voluntary, Apple was certainly under pressure to comply.

So what does this mean?  Essentially Adobe is now resuming its work on developing a version of Flash technology suitable for the iPhone and iPad devices.  It had put those efforts on hold back in April when Apple placed severe restrictions on third party applications.  This should come as good news for Apple users.  Having additional functionality, such as Flash, will help to stay competitive in the rapidly changing space.  As an iPhone user, why should I be limited because of a personal grudge between two CEOs?  Get over it Jobs… let’s move on!

Downstream, this decision will also create new marketing opportunities.  Since Flash applications are currently being utilized by ad agencies and media sites, they’ll eventually have the infrastructure to expand these campaigns to mobile devices.  While some devices already support this technology, advertisers generally want to expand their reach without limitations.  While it’s difficult to predict where this will lead, with Apple and Jobs in the mix, it should be an entertaining journey.

Internet Explorer losing browser share

Firefox browser continues to gain market shareAt it’s peak in 2003, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer claimed 95% of the browser market.  According to a recent report from BBC News, that figure is now around 60%.

Latest statistics, from measurement firm NetApplications, show that IE has 59.9% of the market, with Firefox gaining on it, with 24.5%.

While third-place Google Chrome’s 6.7% share of the market looks tiny by comparison it is rising sharply, up from just 1.7% this time last year.

A new version of IE is imminent.

Microsoft has gradually been losing market share, largely due to concerns over security, experts said.

Apple’s Safari browser is also growing due to increased sales of Macs, plus the iPhone, and iPad.  As an avid Firefox user, I am happy to see an increased usage of Mozilla.  Firefox has a great variety of add-ons to customize your browsing experience.  Although I must admit, from a development standpoint, it would be nice to have some commonalities and standards.

Apple continues to exclude Adobe Flash from iPhone and iPad

AppleAfter an ongoing debate between Apple and Adobe, Steve Jobs announced that Adobe’s Flash is just too sluggish, drains battery life, and is has too many bugs for the iPhone and iPad devices. In a recent article, some of Job’s 1,685-word rant are shared.

He cited “reliability, security and performance,” and the fact that Flash was designed “for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers” as some of the reasons Apple will continue to keep the program off its devices.

But he said the most important reason is Flash puts a third party between Apple and software developers. In other words, developers can take advantage of improvements from Apple only if Adobe upgrades its own software, Jobs wrote.

Apple has been criticized for the omission of Flash because that limits what the iPhone can do. Hulu.com, the popular video viewing site, uses Flash, for example, as do many restaurant websites. But thanks to the immense popularity of the iPhone, game and application developers are pouring their creations onto Apple’s devices without using Flash.

It’ll be interesting to see if this approach by Apple is effective in getting cooperation from Adobe.  After all, Flash is the web standard for delivering rich media content.  Should Apple be more agreeable or do they have a right to be finicky?

Will the Apple iPad kill Amazon’s Kindle with iBooks?

Apple iPad with iBooksSteve Jobs has just announced the introduction of the much anticipated Apple iPad for only $499!  While it had been dubbed the tablet for a while, it has officially been named the iPad.  I have been following along on gdgt’s live coverage.

Here are some features:

  • Can be rotated and held in any direction
  • Web-enabled (um, duh) and extremely fast
  • Has a virtual keyboard
  • Video playback is HD, not widescreen however
  • iBook store enables instant download and display of books, newspapers, and magazines
  • Enhanced iTunes interface

At a glance this device appears to be an overgrown iPhone.  I should admit, I am a huge fan of the iPhone, I like its portability and slick design.  I also like my laptop for what it does.  Do I really need a new “netbook” device to combine the best of both features?  It seems to be eerily similar to the infamous Chevey El Camino – that mutant-like hybrid of a car and truck that some people had the nerve to buy.  Let’s be honest, the back had enough space to fit a 30 pound bag of dog food.

I don’t know that I would consider the iPad a replacement for either device.  Instead, it appears to be forging a new market.  A market catered to gamers, scholars, and hobbyist.  It is a device which allows reading of books, textbooks and changing of fonts, etc.  It seems to be in direct competition with Amazon’s Kindle device.  Although it has a lot more to offer – and a much more robust interface.  While the market has been somewhat slow to embrace the Kindle, we’ll see if things speed up now that Apple has entered the game.

I’m curious to see how the market will respond to this device. Would you buy one?
